Qi Energy

In Chinese Qi ("Chi") means breath air, as well as life force energy.

Qi energy is an underlying concept in the study of Tai Chi (and consequently, of course, the study of JKD). Understanding it´s existence, and it´s manipulation, is a key factor to the study of martial arts.

It takes on various other names (pratna, force, aura, etc.) and is generally invisible to the naked eye (although with proper training, one can acquire the skill to see it). The best way I can describe it is this: it is an internal "energy" that exists in all living things, interconnected with all living things, which gives existence to all living things, and is bound neither by space nor time. The flow of this energy follows a path of "yin & yang" (next topic).

All physical matter in existence is basically a reflection of Qi energy. Think of it as your spirit. Your body is a reflection of what your spirit looks like. Any imbalance of this energy within you, or the presence of negative

energy within you, will also be reflected on your body in the form of sickness, disease, stress, etc.

This Qi within us, is interconnected with all other Qi in the universe (sometimes called "cosmic energy" for this reason), and this includes all other human beings, all matter, all planets, solar systems, galaxies etc. (this would account for the accuracy of astrology). Consequently, our Qi is constantly being "exchanged" with that of others in a give-and-take pattern of yin & yang (this would explain how women often "cycle" together, or the miraclulous healings that often take place when this energy is manipulated).

For an excellent depiction of manipulating Qi energy, see Baupuzi (Master Embracing Simplicity) under the Articles and Excerpts section.

Yin & Yang

The concept of yin & yang can go very deep and takes on various names (for example, it is also known as "karma", "the law of attractions", etc.), but keep in mind it is a basic underlying principle that is followed in

the study of Kung Fu (and consequently, of course, the study of JKD). Yin & yang is a principle used to illustrate balance -- which applies to ALL aspects of life, for all aspects of life follow this rule.
